PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Maternal Child Health Program provides resources and supports to pregnant women and parents of infants and children up to six years of age. This program ensures that child, mother, father, families and ultimately communities have opportunities to increase their skills to provide safe and nurturing care for their children, and are supported throughout preconception, pregnancy and early childhood to ensure the best health and development outcomes for children and the well-being of their parents.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Maternal Child Health Worker is accountable for the day-to-day support and programming to pregnant women, and mothers and fathers of infants and young children up to six years of age. This includes the development and facilitation of educational programs, one-on-one support, and home visits to ensure families have opportunities to increase their preparedness for parenthood, and ability to effectively care for their infants and children and themselves.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide outreach services, pre and postnatal support, informing communities about the Maternal Child Health Program
• Provides services to clients supported by evidence, research and multidiscipline expertise on the wide range of health, social, and program specific issues related to health care services within First Nation communities and CSFS clinics.
• Carry out activities to support families in improving health outcomes for pregnant women and their families
• Facilitate workshops and information sessions, conduct interviews, intakes, and assessments
• Attend required meetings, events and training seminars as necessary
• Maintain effective communication with a wide array of individuals to reach strategic goals
• Collaborates with other multidisciplinary team members and physicians to facilitate an inter-professional approach to standards of practice with a focus on promoting team-based care.
• Conduct home visits, provide information related to parenting skills, problem solving, childhood growth and development, and provide referrals as required
• Assist with community kitchens
• Involve elders from communities to share teachings about culture and traditions
• Promote healthy relationships including traditional child rearing practices, traditional fatherhood practices and self-care
• Liaise with Community Leadership, Community Based Teams, Nurses, other Carrier Sekani Family Services Support staff and other stakeholders to ensure client needs are met
• Participates in ICT meetings; including; process, care planning and follow up, resource planning, standards while maximizing the scope of practice of ICT members
• Assist mothers, fathers to identify natural and professional support systems
• Maintain a documented system of records for files which is inclusive of daily charting, monthly reports, quarterly reports, statistical records and reports, incident reports and the maintenance of personal files and forms required by the program
• Perform other duties as assigned
COMPLIANCE
• Comply with local, provincial and federal government laws, standards and regulations (Child and Family Services Act, Aboriginal Operational Procedures and Standards Indicators)
• Follow duty to report legislation
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES / PREFERRED SKILLS
• Knowledge of First Nations culture and traditions (specifically Carrier and Sekani)
• Knowledge of therapeutic life skills strategies
• Knowledge of traditional and contemporary child care, development and methodology from perinatal to 6 years
• Knowledge of the Child and Family Community Service Act and other regulations pertinent to the child welfare system
• Strong networking and community resource knowledge
• Ability to maintain client confidentiality
• Ability to work in a dynamic environment, independent and as part of a team with minimal direction
• Computer skills including the ability to operate spreadsheets and word processing programs
• Oral communication skills – Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations, demonstrates group presentation skills and conducts meetings
• Written communication skills – Edits work for spelling and grammar, presents numerical data effectively and is able to read and interpret written information
• Efficient time management and organizational skills
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Two-year diploma in a social science or health science degree program required, or
• DONA International certified Doula, and
• Experience and/or training in Early Childhood Education
WORKING CONDITIONS
• Occasionally lift and/or move equipment and boxes up to 25lbs
• Computer work and typing requiring hours sitting and using office equipment, computers and attending sessions.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
• Initial and on-going employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record check. Criminal Record Check must be conducted every three years.
• Possess a valid driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle insured for business use
• Must attend non-violent crisis intervention training • Ongoing professional development as necessary TOOLS/ EQUIPMENT
• Use of computer and accessories; Windows Operating System, various software applications (including MS Office suite). Use of a photocopier/fax machine/scanner and vehicle C.B. radio as required.
Qualifications:
Basic ECE
Additional Qualifications:
• Two-year diploma in a social science or health science degree program required, or
• DONA International certified Doula, and
• Experience and/or training in Early Childhood Education
Salary & Benefits:
Wage range: $26.79 - $34.70 per hour
